Coloured drawings depicting the dog-headed people ("Cynocephales") of Nacumera Island.
From October 29th: These cynocephales were definitely not good dogs. These were dog-headed people from Nacumera Island who were very badly behaved. Here we see them fighting and killing knights as represented by Sir John Mandeville c. 1425-1450.
From October 30th: Manticores might have been beautiful part-human part-lion creatures, but they could be more than dangerous. Here we see a manticore attacking a harmless (albeit naked) man as depicted by Peraldus in Theological Miscellany c. late 13th century.
Miniatures of a manticore mauling a naked man, a arah, and a man chasing a wof with a bird in its mouth.

From October 31st: Happy Halloween! For our final MESA Monsters we have a triple treat! We have Cerberus (the same creature depicted on the title page), a three-headed hellhound, and a pair of demons battling Hercules, Theseus, and Pirithous in the underworld while fire and serpent-like creatures assist. This depiction of the twelfth labor of Hercules in which he was tasked with capturing Cerberus is from L'Épître Othéa'by Christine de Pizan c. 1410-1414.
From everyone at MESA, have a happy and spooky Halloween!
